J&J Tortilla Co. began with a simple wish: to make food we felt good sharing with our own family. As new parents, we started looking more closely at the ingredients in the foods we brought home. We wanted something simple, wholesome and authentic—and that search became the beginning of our story.
Our family. Our story.
A little more about how we got here.
01
Good tortillas start at home.
In 2012, we met a family in Canada who had spent years perfecting a clean, authentic flour tortilla. Their craft inspired us. With their guidance, we began experimenting with recipes in our own home.
From 2012 through 2014, we kept working on our recipe. We wanted the kind of tortilla that made a meal better: simple ingredients, an authentic taste and no preservatives. Those early years gave us the foundation for J&J Tortilla Co.
02
From our kitchen to the market.
In 2015, we purchased a tortilla production line from a friend in Wisconsin and started with just two varieties: Organic White and Organic Whole Wheat. We later added Spelt, then Kamut, followed by Spinach Garlic and Tomato Basil.
In 2016, we began selling our tortillas at local farmers markets. The market became a place to share our tortillas and hear directly from the people bringing them home. Over time, our tortillas also found a place on local store shelves throughout Michigan. The earlier bags, handwritten market signs and store displays in our photo archive are pieces of that journey.
03
Simple ingredients. More choices.
In 2023, J&J became USDA certified organic. Our certified organic varieties include Unbleached White, Whole Wheat, Spelt, Kamut, Spinach Garlic and Tomato Basil. USDA Organic standards prohibit GMO ingredients. All of our tortillas are made without GMO ingredients or preservatives.
We also listen to the different choices our customers want to make. In response to customer demand, we introduced no-seed-oil tortillas in 2024. Today, Tallow Unbleached White is available, with Tallow Spelt and Avocado Oil Unbleached White coming soon. Our avocado oil tortillas are planned for early 2027.
We are a family-owned business in Hopkins, Michigan, and our purpose has stayed close to where it began: making wholesome, authentic tortillas with ingredients that are simple to read and understand.
We are grateful for every customer, farmers market and store that has helped us share our tortillas. Your feedback continues to matter to us. As J&J grows, we want every pack to reflect the same care that started in our own home.
